Design

While working at Not Doppler as a 3D artist on Crash of Cars, I was also given the opportunity to take on the game design work for the project. This was during the post-release phase of the game, while supporting the game with content updates. This began in late 2018, and by mid 2019 I was doing all the game design work as well as my 3D art duties, which was the case until support for the game finished at the end of 2024.

Design tasks typically included:

  • Maps
    • Ideation and concepts for new map themes
    • Map layout drafts
    • Greyboxing maps in engine
    • Testing map gameplay
    • Placement of gameplay objects (pickups etc.)
    • Navmesh setup and editing for AI
    • Scoping and detailing briefs for map features/mechanics
  • Vehicles
    • Researching and collating new vehicle ideas
    • Ideation for new 'perk cars' which have special abilities or powerups
    • Scoping and detailing briefs for perk cars
  • Game Balance
    • Gathering and analyzing gameplay data from analytics platforms
    • Using this data to show where balance changes may be needed
    • Coming up with changes/solutions to address perceived balance issues

The design side of my role also required me to liaise between the coding team, product team, and my other role as the artist to co-ordinate the realisation of designs, and make changes to designs or implementations where necessary.
